  1. 1 · Start with WTI

If a headline says “oil,” it usually means WTI. That is the left-hand number.

  2. 2 · Check Brent

Brent tells you whether the move is also in oil that travels by ship, not only in the US benchmark.

  3. 3 · Read the gap

A wider gap means the two markets are pricing different supply. A tight gap means they are moving as one.

How to read today’s oil price

Both figures are dollars for one barrel of crude. WTI is the US price. Brent is the price used when the barrel is headed for the world market. Use both before you decide whether a headline is a US story or a global one.

The change next to WTI is against its previous close. It is not a forecast, and it is not the change in the price of gasoline.

Before you use the number

  • Match the name. WTI and Brent are different barrels.
  • Read the date. A closed market holds the last close.
  • Do not treat this as the price at a pump.

Questions

What is the oil price today?

The large left figure is WTI crude in dollars per barrel. The large right figure is Brent. Both are the latest daily close on this page, not a guess.

What is the difference between WTI and Brent?

WTI is the US crude benchmark. Brent is the benchmark used for most oil moved by sea. They usually move together. The gap underneath is Brent minus WTI.

Does this oil price set the price at the pump?

No. Gasoline adds refining, delivery, tax, and the station’s margin. A move in crude can show up at the pump later, and not by the same amount.

How often does this page update?

The figures follow the latest daily close. They refresh through the day and hold the last close when the market is shut.
